RIVERSIDE REP PREPS ITS SECOND SEASON RETURN

RIVERSIDE, CA (8/4/14) – The Inland Empire’s newest professional theater has announced its second exciting season. Riverside Repertory Theater, which strives to produce new and innovative approaches to traditional musical theater, will present four musicals, each with a live orchestra and professional actors, designers and directors. Assassins, West Side Story, Pirates of Penzance and a new original musical will be presented in downtown Riverside at the Box Theater in the Fox Entertainment Plaza throughout the 2014-2015 season.

One of Stephen Sondheim’s most intriguing pieces, Assassins, will launch the Rep’s second season on November 7th. This Tony-Award winning musical toys with space and time as it gathers characters from different stages of American history that have assassinated, or attempted to assassinate, Presidents of the United States. A fascinating study of history and musical styles mixed with levity, suspense and beautiful songs, the Rep’s production of Assassins will be directed by Artistic Director, Matt Neves. In late January, the Rep will continue its goal of producing traditional musicals in non-traditional ways with one of Broadway classics, West Side Story, the beautiful, musical love story based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. How can a theater company that is based in a small black box theater do justice to this huge piece of musical theater history? "That is the challenge and the inspiration for retelling this masterpiece," says Neves. "This will surely be a once in a lifetime opportunity."As part of its mission to discover the next generation of musical theater artists, Riverside Rep will begin its readings series, Originally Riverside, which will include a staged reading of a new, never produced musical. The company will conclude its season in May with a new, avant-garde production of the classic comedy Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan. "Audiences were thrilled with the Rep’s 2014 innovative approach to Fiddler on the Roof and this production will add a similar ground-breaking slant on the tale of pirates, policemen, fathers and daughters."

Produced by Managing Director, David St. Pierre and Artistic Director, Matt Neves, season tickets are now on sale. Tickets can be purchased at www.riversiderep.org or by calling (800) 595-4849.
